As invited by Macromolecule Science Dept., Dr. Ed Gerstner，Greater China Executive Editor of Nature Publishing Group, participated in the researchers’ workshop in chemistry field in 208 meeting room, Yuanchengying Building on Nov 13, 2014. During the workshop, several faculty members from different departments presented their recent research achievements and discussed specific research issues with Dr. Ed Gerstner. After the exchange, Dr. Ed Gerstner was invited to present an impressive report titled ‘The Only Way Is Ethics: How to build a reputation and keep it’at Room 306, No.4 Teaching Building.

Dr. Ed Gerstner first introduced the Singapore Statement of Research Integrity which was signed in 2010 by representatives from 51 countries and emphasizes on “Honesty、Accountability、Professional courtesy & fairness and Good stewardship”. Dr. Ed Gerstner addressed that scientific and technical payoffs will benefit mankind, while integrity plays the significant role of the process. Though different countries or organizations may differ in organizing and developing scientific research, basic research integrity principles should be observed through mutual understanding.

Thereafter, Dr. Gerstner listed several examples of academic dishonorable behaviors like plagiarism、fabrication and falsification etc., these dishonorable behaviors are chief hindrance to academic improvement, which will definitely damage academic reputation. He also pointed out that paper contributors were found fabricate experiments’ data, falsify pictures etc. during his refereeing process. He hopes scientific researchers perform with high discipline to maintain the academic conscientiousness and morality.
