Zhengzhong Shao-Xin Chen’s joint group successfully prepared a-Fe2O3 mesocrystals by using silk protein as biotemplate

Professor Xin Chen and coworkers at Fudan University published an interesting article entitled “Protein Biomineralized Nanoporous Inorganic Mesocrystals with Tunable Hierarchical Nanostructures” in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on October 17, 2014. This is a cooperative research study with Professor Dongyuan Zhao at Department of Chemistry, and Dr. Xiang Fei and Dr. Wei Li are the co-first author of this paper.

Mesocrystals with the symmetry defying morphologies and highly ordered superstructures composed of primary units have recently triggered enormous research activities because of their fascinating features and promising applications in many applications, such as catalysis, sensing, and energy storage/conversion. However, the synthesis of mesocrystals with highly sophisticate superstructure arising from the precise assembly of subunits by conventional methods has proved to be extremely challenging. In this article, the authors developed a biomimetic strategy for the synthesis of hematite mesocrysals with tunable hierarchical nanostructure through a facile biomineralization route using silk fibroin as a biotemplate. The obtained hematite mesocrystals have a uniform, highly crystalline, and porous nanostructure. The size and morphology of these hematite mesocrystals can be tunable by simply varying the concentration of silk fibroin and FeCl3 in such a biomineralization system. This biomimetic strategy features precisely tunable, high efficiency, and low-cost, thus opens up an avenue to access the novel functional mesocrystals with hierarchical structures in various practical applications.

The possible formation mechanism of the hematite mesocrystals by using silk fibroin as biotemplate.
